Microscopically , the mucosa of the stomach showed extensive cytolysis and contained large_numbers of Gram-negative bacterial rods . The mucosa of the jejunum and ileum showed similar changes , and in some areas the submucosa was edematous and contained considerable numbers of neutrophils .
