[ noun ] (medicine) abnormally enlarged thyroid gland; can result from under-production or over-production of hormone or from a deficiency of iodine in the diet
Synonyms Used in print (Jacob Robbins et al., "The thyroid-stimulating...)Any of the antithyroid drugs , of either type , if given in large enough doses for a long period_of_time will cause goitre , owing to inhibition of thyroid_hormone synthesis , with production of hypothyroidism . There is some evidence that naturally occurring goitrogens may play a role in the development of goitre , particularly in Tasmania and Australia ( Clements and Wishart , 1956 ) . In man the normal level of iodine in the diet and the level necessary to prevent development of goitre is about 100 mg per day . Related terms |
